A 60 per cent mourvèdre plus syrah Costières de Nîmes joint from the western Rhône Valley, meaty and serious, welling up with earthy dark red fruit. A blend with attitude, not as the name might suggest but certainly opinionated, grippy and stubborn. Belies the price point and announces further presence with notes of creosote, graphite, star anise and clove. The perfume, flavours and chalky texture all conspire to make this a formidable $20 bottle of wine. Things should get interesting in a year to 18 months time. Drink date: 2022-2025. Score - 89.
